BILLINGS, Mont. – Over the Memorial Day weekend, Billings experienced five water main breaks, causing disruptions across the city. The breaks occurred at Gabel Road and 30th, 4th and 13th, 13th and Central, Parkview and Lewis, and the 3500 block of Cook Avenue.
The incidents led to flooding, water outages, and road closures. Debbie Meling, the Director of Public Works for Billings, explained why these breaks are not unusual for this time of year.
“So when demand goes up. So this weekend we saw a lot of people turn on the sprinkler systems and we started pushing a little harder. So any time you have a vulnerability in your system, so something that just is a little bit of a weak spot, it’ll pick it up when you increase those pressures or increase that demand,” Meling said.
