From Trial to Standard: How HDPE Adoption Scales
HDPE pipe adoption is not immediate. It is driven by need and built through education. Over the past two decades, the industry has taken a deliberate approach to equipping municipal owners, engineers, and contractors with the knowledge required to properly evaluate HDPE.
Utilities do not typically make a full transition upfront. They start with targeted applications, test performance in the field and build confidence over time. As understanding increases, usage expands from pilot projects to broader implementation and in some cases becomes the preferred or exclusive material.
This utility followed that progression. A need was identified, learning was prioritized, trials were executed, and performance was validated. The result is a strong HDPE user, not by direction, but by demonstrated performance.
The Plastics Pipe Institute supported this outcome through early engagement and education. Camille Rubeiz, PE, FASCE, played a key role in that effort.
This pattern is consistent across the industry. Adoption begins with measured use, builds momentum through proven results, and scales into long-term implementation. In some cases, it becomes the standard.
